چکیده

Autoregulation is the term used to describe the maintenance of constant perfusion over a range of arterial pressures. Autoregulation occurs in all vascular beds, but other mechanisms also act on vascular control, for example autonomic activity and plasma concentrations of hormones. The influence of these other mechanisms varies widely between different circuits, so that the effect of induced hypotension is different on the vascular systems of the brain, lung and kidney. For example, sudden blood loss causes more marked vasoconstriction in kidney than in myocardium. In brain, the influence of mechanisms other than autoregulation is relatively small. Thus, maximal sympathetic activity reduces CBF by only 20% (Harper et al., 1972) which is approximately the same as the change produced by a decrease of 1 kPa in arterial PCO2. Autoregulation is therefore predominant in the cerebral circulation and acts to maintain CBF constant over a range of mean arterial pressures (MAP) which extend from 60 to 130 mm Hg in man (Lassen and Christensen, 1976). If, during induced hypotension, MAP is reduced beyond the lower limit of autoregulation, CBF starts to decrease in parallel with MAP until the ischaemic thresholds discussed by Symon (1985) and Heuser and Guggenberger (198 5) are reached. It is important to note that the lower limit of autoregu-

Cardiovascular Effect of Dorsal Periaqueductal Gray During Lipopolysaccharide-induced Hypotension

Introduction: The central mechanism related to the cardiovascular response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced hypotension is not entirely known, but it is suggested that numerous brain areas such as dorsal periaqueductal gray (dPAG) are involved in this process. In the current work, the cardiovascular effect of the dPAG during LPS-induced hypotension is investigated. Methods: The study animal...

Minocycline blocks c-terminal fragments of amyloid precursor protein-induced neurotoxicity by inhibition of cytochrome c release and caspase-12 activation

Minocycline is a second-generation tetracycline that effectively crosses the blood-brain barrier. It has remarkable neuroprotective qualities in models of cerebral ischaemia, traumatic brain injury, Huntington’s and Parkinson’s diseases. However, there is no evidence about neuroprotective effects of minocycline on AD. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized neurop...

Cerebral complications following induced hypotension.

Over an 8-year period (1977-1984), 1,802 otorhinolaryngological procedures were performed under controlled hypotension. Four patients showed symptoms of cerebral damage post-operatively. One patient had pre-operative unrecognized stenosis of the internal carotid artery, another a hypoplastic vertebral artery. In this female patient, the head had been strongly rotated to the side to expose the s...

Preterm neonatal cardiovascular instability: does understanding the fetus help evaluate the newborn?

Preterm newborns, particularly very low birth weight newborns, frequently experience intermittent hypotension and/or hypoperfusion. Organ perfusion is largely distinct from systemic hypotension, suggesting that changes in underlying vascular tone are the major determinants of perfusion. Preterm fetuses have a remarkable anaerobic tolerance and ability to survive major insults with no or limited...
